Home layout and decorating: What Are Primitive Decorations?  August 3, 2013 – 06:54 am
Ideas for Primitive Christmas Decorations Home Design Tips

Decorating using a primitive style is a type of country look with a twist. Primitive Home Décor is not a new. In fact, it has evolved from a variety of eclectic ideas formed by many individuals for many generations. Primitive decorations can be found in a variety of places such as old antique stores. However, you can find any type of items at yard sales, online or even in your own garage that can be made into "your" personality through design.
Primitive decorating was created many years ago. However, my 84 year old grandmother didn't call it decorating; she called it "just finding the necessary items needed to make a dwelling a home". Items were purchased or made out of necessity rather than want.

In a home decorated in the primitive style, you might find old antiques that have been restored to their original luster or you may find handmade crafts adorning the walls. Many primitive pieces are painted, sanded and made to appear old. There are other techniques that use chains to make 'dings' in wood floors and furniture which give them the appearance of being weathered. The primary thing that one looks for when using Primitive Home Décor is a rustic appearance with a fashionable look.

In many homes that are decorated with the primitive style, you will see a variety of traditional colors in soft yellow, blue or green. Much of the paint is intentionally 'crackled' giving it the country or aged appearance. Browsing magazines such as Southern Living and Better Homes and Garden can give you ideas about how you would like to layout your home. Even though some of these items can be quite expensive, you can simulate the same look by scouting out flea markets, auctions, consignment stores, and yard sales for furniture that needs repair. You can then create a beautiful Primitive Home for pennies.

If you want to pursue Primitive Decor, it also allows you to use heirlooms handed down in your family. If you decorate with accessories like country wooden signs and pictures, this completes the look. Old plates can be used for wall decorations with the addition of a simple sticky hook you can purchase at any store. Dried spring flowers can be made into garlands to go over doorways and windows to add beautiful, country color to the dullest of rooms.

Folk art is another type of Primitive Home Décor. Traditionally, folk art was produced by individuals who did not represent a particular genre of artist but rather individuals who had a desire to make artistic representations of their lives many years ago. This type of Primitive design has also become very popular when designing with a country flavor.

Today, this type of decorating has taken the country by storm. It gives any home a warm, lived in appearance. Whether you live on the East Coast or the West, you can walk into many homes that display the diverse style of its owner when decorated with Primitive Décor.

The cross pre-dates Jesus life on earth

According to The Catholic Encyclopedia, “the primitive form of the cross seems to have been that of the so-called ‘gamma’ cross (crux gammata), better known to Orientalists and students of prehistoric archæology by its Sanskrit name, swastika.” This sign was widely used among Hindus in India and Buddhists throughout Asia and is still seen in decorations and ornaments in those areas.
According to Greek scholar W. E. Vine, stauros′ “denotes, primarily, an upright pale or stake. On such malefactors were nailed for execution. Both the noun and the verb stauroō, to fasten to a stake or pale, are originally to be distinguished from the ecclesiastical form of a two beamed cross.”

A little background...we have a farmhouse or country looking home (it has a full length covered front porch with rocking chairs and a swing) with tan siding and maroon stairs and deck with white trim railings. Inside I u … room we decorated when we moved in but the sofa is moss green and we have 2 recliners that are rust/red orange (but I could do slip covers). So what should I do about the crown molding? Leave it alone and just decorate?

  • Avatar Wendy B How did you decide how to decorate your home?
    May 21, 2007 by Wendy B | Posted in Decorating & Remodelling

We are getting ready to buy our first house. I have been pulling pictures out of magazines and jotting down ideas for decorating. I find though, that I will really like style #1, but then the next week, not so much. Th …rds an earthy theme....browns and greens. How did you know? Do you still love it?
I've asked friends and family and they tell me to go with what I love. I can't think of anything...so I don't think that will work.

    • We used a VERY funky, mosaic glasstile from Walker-Zanger in our kitchen/backsplash. I ended up designing nearly EVERYTHING around this dang tile. Its colors are evocative of abalone, or the inside of an oyster, clam...re … favorite element (like a gorgeous rug) and build around it.

Good luck! My only big opinion is: DON'T go for the "model home" look--too impersonal, pedestrian, IMO. Your home should look like YOU.
