Home Decor DIY: kids edition  December 30, 2013 – 02:01 am

home decor DIY It is a universally acknowledged truth that kids are expensive. Long before they are crying in the supermarket aisle, cleaning out your fridge, and racking up your car’s mileage, kids will have already cost you a small fortune. Don’t be fooled by the diminutive size of your Mini-Me; his or her claims on your household’s finances are huge. If you have survived the first year of parenthood (and the related sunk costs),you may think yourself safe — at least for a little while. But you are not. Case in point: the toddler bedroom.

Even without a new addition on the way,at some point you’ll face the reality that your not-so-little-anymore “baby” has outgrown his or her nursery. You will be left with the task of deciding how to approach the issue of your toddler’s new digs.Home decor DIYAs with all things involving discretionary spending, you can be as frugal or spendthrifty as you wish and your budget allows. I’m not here to tell you how you should spend your money, but I thought it would be fun to share how we spent our money. For extra entertainment value,I will also share my philosophy on decorating for children.

I’ll start with that. When it comes to kids’ bedrooms,I have two pet peeves. The first one is over-decorated spaces designed to appeal to the adults’ sensibilities. If you’ve seen any celebrity baby bedrooms, you will know what I’m talking about. I’m sure little Amaryllis Trixiebelle doesn’t care about Swarovski crystal chandeliers at the age of 2; she won’t demand 500-count monogrammed sheets until she’s at least 5.Home decor DIYMy second pet peeve is clutter. This is not a pet peeve limited to kids’ bedrooms, and I recognize the futility of trying to banish it permanently. I guess a better way to state it is that my pet peeve is lack of foresight in arranging for adequate and simple storage solutions that allow for quick clutter concealment.

Therefore, when it came time to decorate my son’s new bedroom,I was guided by two principles: think like a kid,and keep it clean(able). The first one in particular tested my abilities because,as my family will attest,I have the soul of a crotchety grandma. A third consideration was cost, naturally. With a new kid on the way,the “spare no cost” approach was definitely not part of the equation. On the other hand,it was important to us that our son have a bedroom he loves and feels comfortable in,the better to mitigate any adjustment issues. This is what he ended up with.

JoAnne's fabrics - DIY aisle runners

Hey, those of you who are making your own aisle runners, JoAnne fabrics is having a sale on their nice thicker fabrics - 50% off 54" Home Decor fabrics. You should be able to find the finished edged fabrics there, this way you don't have to worry about hemming the edge of the fabric. Sale starts Sunday, April 2nd and I'm not sure when it ends.

Some ideas

Two Hershey kisses wrapped in red cellophane and attached to a wire "stem" make a cute rosebud favor (very Valentine's Day)
"Red hot" cinnamon candy hearts are cheap to buy (usually found at bulk candy stores) and would make unique "confetti"
Almost every DIY invite maker has "double hearts" invites, thank yous, etc
I'm also guessing, since you guys love V-day already, that you probably have tons of decorations at home. Raid the closet, and the closets of your closest friends/family, for V-day decor. Red and gold candles will help, too

YES, cheap is smart.

I'm thinking of renting a vacation home for the week. Although that is expensive for SF, we plan on having our family shack up there-it's cheaper than a hotel! And use the living/kitchen and yard for the reception at the end of their stay and hope those will help with the decor.
Also, DIY, baby. We are making our own postcards for Save-the-date. And my fiance fortunately, knows letterpress printing, so he's doing the invites.
We are making our own cake too. And beer and few chosen cocktails (premade mixed rum drinks so no worries about a bartender). Some food we will probably have help with or drop-off cater

Few things

Most important I believe when dealing with a budget is to determine what is most important. Is it the dress? Food? Entertainment? Decor? Photographs? Whatever it is find what you love and "skimp" in other areas (not skimp as in you want $10k dress so you won't feed your guests).
If you choose a venue that's "free" as in your home or what not, know that it will cost more. I thought my wedding would be cheap since I have a free venue but instead of being able to use venue rentals etc. We have to get everything. Tent, toilets, linens, dishes, tables, chairs you name it... way .more expensive

  • Avatar Toomoody Do you think the Apple Kitchen Decor theme is outdated? How about the Italian Theme?
May 10, 2009 by Toomoody | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling

I am moving and was thinking about getting rid of some things.
I have had this decor for a while but I still kinda like it. I like the theme ideas but I am not up to date as far as home decor.
What are some new kitchen theme ideas?

    • I wouldn't worry about who says what is outdated. Decorate your house with things that please you. You are the one that will look at it. And don't forget to chose colors that make you look good standing in the room too.

  • Avatar Jade What are some good ideas to "stage" a home that is for sale?
May 22, 2008 by Jade | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling

I am packing everything personal up,cleaning and organizing but I need some simple and elegant ideas to "stage" the home so that it is more appealing to buyers.

    • 1. Clean - it is the most important step. Make sure every nook and cranny of your home is spotless. This also includes cleaning out your garage if you have one.

      2. De-clutter - Not only should you remove ob …don't keep your dining table set for a party of 6 unless you are actually planning on using it that day but setting it for an open house sets the stage for how the potential buyer can entertain in the home.) Best of Luck.
